Graphic Scores

Metal Score (2018), is a graphic score and community performance work. Players navigate a system of accidentals and timings grouped as if in a cloud or flock of birds. The accidentals are marked in the microtonal Extended Helmholtz-Ellis Just Intonation Pitch Notation and are without specified pitches, encouraging performers to explore concepts of ‘sharpness’, ‘flatness’, and ‘naturalness’ or to engage with the visual form of the characters. The score began as a painting of white ink on dark paper, then set in the sun, photographed, and digitally manipulated before being printed as a transfer onto metal plates.

Interweaving (2020), score 1

Interweaving is a score conceived as a relational activity to participate in together, regardless of time and distance.

Interweaving as an activity (the score, players, and intended and unintended relationships) is an attempt to examine structures of orientation in time, through distances in space, and between people. Throughout this process, different possibilities of motion and listening to one another appear. The collaborative aspect is essential to the realization of the scores.

Interweaving (2020), score 2

(cont’d) The intention of this project is to use the score as a map to traverse a melodic and improvisational path among the cardinal directions within our own spaces and to acknowledge the sonic events and interactions that transpire in those directions.

Additionally the use of graphically transcribed field recordings and open windows acts toward the possibility for extending the frame of the score-map: for the outside world to come in, and the inside world of the score-map to go out.
